Future-Self Research Behind Write Ten Years
Future-self reflection has a research basis, but that does not make an AI-generated life scenario a prediction. This page separates published findings from the assumptions Write Ten Years still needs to test.

What research suggests
Future self-continuity describes how connected a person feels to a temporally distant version of themselves. Research has associated a stronger connection with more future-oriented decisions. A 2024 study of the MIT Future You system reported that participants who interacted with an AI-generated future self felt more connected to that future self and reported lower anxiety after the session.
The study tested a brief intervention and self-reported outcomes. It did not show that an AI system can accurately predict a person’s life, and it did not prove lasting behavior change.
How the product uses that idea
Write Ten Years makes a distant future concrete through first-person letters, but it adds a contrast: two routes begin from the same present and differ around one confirmed behavior. The contrast is intended to make compounding and tradeoffs easier to notice.
What remains a product hypothesis
- Whether two contrasting letters help more than one idealized letter.
- Whether a vivid letter improves follow-through beyond the first day.
- Whether the proposed small action fits different cultures and life stages.
- Whether users feel understood rather than manipulated.
- Whether any benefit lasts beyond the immediate experience.
These questions require user research and outcome data. Model self-evaluation is not evidence.

One present. Two possible decades.
Let the future write back.
Begin with one honest moment. You can skip choice questions, review the behavioral fork, and stop before anything is sent to a model. Read both letters when they are generated; email delivery is optional.
